Foreword
While Europe is bracing for one of the coldest winters in
d e c a d e s, vi si tors to th e S e r bia n c api tal sh oul d take c om for t
i n th e fa c t th a t n o a m ou n t o f sn ow or fre ezi n g te m p era tu res
can put a damper on Belgrade's easygoing spirit, cultural
richness (p 19) or unparalleled nightlife (p 41). Over the
next couple months an especially diverse selection of
exhibitions, concerts, festivals and other events should
guarantee that no matter what your interests or tastes
you'll have somewhere warm to spend your days and
nights. Exhibitions range from contemporary Korean works
(p 11) to new acquisitions at Museum of Applied Art (p 12),
while musical events likewise offer a variety of choices
such as electro-Tango (p 13), a Gypsy opera and weekly
performances by the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra (p
18), and if you're interested in science, the environment
or underwater filmmaking (p 17) then there's a festival for
you! Of course the most anticipated event of the season is
probably Cirque de Soleil's five-night run of Saltimbanco at
Belgrade Arena (p 15). Here at In Your Pocket, we've been
hard at work to bring you the most up to date info on our
favourite city, adding hotels (p 21), restaurants (p 32) and
nearly a dozen new bars and clubs (p 41) to our listings, as
well as a mini biography of the eccentric genius and one of
Serbia's favourite sons, Nikola Tesla (p 10). As always we
welcome any and all feedback, be it on Twitter, Facebook
or even old-fashioned email.

Cover story
Currentl y th e tallest building in
Serbia at 205m, Avala Tower was
designed by architects Uglješa
Bogdanović and Slobodan Janjić
and originally opened in 1965. On 29
April 1999, it was destroyed by NATO
bombardment under somewhat
dubious circumstances - suppos-
edly targeted in order to keep Radio
Television Serbia off the air, broad-
casts has already been shifted to a
network of local TV stations - and prior to 11 September
2001, held the distinction of being the tallest building
ever destroyed. After a lengthy fund raising campaign
the tower was completely rebuilt, and officially reopened
in October 2009, with the new addition of a restaurant
and observation platform at the top.
In Your Pocket
is once again breaking new ground.

The In Your Pocket iPhone App
Press Box
A wide range of
In Your Pocket
guides are now
available in
i Tu n e s
as
iPhone
apps. Develo-
ped in association with
Meta4Labs
, the apps
combine all the best features of
In Your Pocket
guides - up-to-date, accurate, well-written and
independent information - with the functionality
of the
iPhone
.
“Solid, reliable information on everything from
where to book a reasonable B&B to how best
to spend 72 hours in a city.”
The Guardian
“You do not even need to pack a guidebook:
just pick up an In Your Pocket when you
a rrive.”
Simon Calder
The Independent & LBC Radio
“In Your Pocket: a cheeky, well-written series
of guidebooks.”
The New York Times
“Most of the traditional guidebook companies
now have decent websites, with plenty of a dvi -
ce and information either freely available or
downloadable for a fee, but inyourpocket.com
is also well worth a browse. Concentrating on
both well-known and more offbeat European
destinations, its free downloadable city and
country guides are compiled by locals and
regularly updated.”
The Independent
You can search all venues in a city by location,
and find the cafes, bars and restaurants closest
to you, as well as browse the app’s entire content
offline. We even supply high-resolution static
street and transport maps (exactly the same
as those in our guides) so you can enjoy
In Your
Pocket
on your
iPhone
without racking up huge
roaming charges.
“The secret of the In Your Pocket guides is
that, unlike many expensive travel guides,
they are written by native English speakers
living in the city they are writing about. That
can lend itself to frank, matter-of-fact advice
about your destination rather than jaded
impressions from world-weary professional
travel writers.”
The Irish Times
Other features include fully integrated Google
Maps, within-app dialling and web browsing, em-
bedded
In Your Pocket
video guides, currency
exchange calculator and local weather informa-
tion. All
In Your Pocket
apps have native hi-res
graphics for
iPhone 4
.
“With so many European cities now within
easy range of a low-cost airline flight, this web-
site is a (literally) priceless first stop before
your holiday. The guides are free to download
and print off as pdfs and have information
on where to eat and stay and what to see on
European city breaks.”
And like
In Your Pocket
guides, our apps are
updated regularly by local researchers and
native English speaking writers. More than ten
In Your Pocket
cities are currently available
as
iPhone
apps, and more are being released
all the time.
The Times
“In Your Pocket guides are each written by an
English language writer who lives locally. All
information is also available on the publisher’s
website.”
Visit the
App Store
on your
iPhone
or PC/Mac
now and see if your city is
In Your Pocket
and
on your
iPhone
.
Sueddeutsche Zeitung
“The In Your Pocket series of guide booklets
have turned out to be highly useful in avoiding
tourist traps and other travel hazards. A mix of
Lonely Planet and Time Out, they have beco-
me a European publishing phenomenon.”
